About Chiropractic

What Is Chiropractic?

There's nothing mysterious about chiropractic. It is a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the causes of physical problems, rather than just the symptoms. Chiropractic is based on a simple but powerful premise:With a normally functioning spine and a healthy lifestyle, your body is better able to heal itself. That's because the spinal cord, which is protected by the spine, is the main pathway of your nervous system. It controls feeling, movement, and function throughout your body.

Vertebrae

Bones in your spine can become misaligned, irritating your nerves or causing muscles to stretch unevenly. Joints where vertebrae connect can lock up, causing back and neck pain.

Discs

Cushioning discs between vertebrae can bulge or rupture. This may put pressure on nerves or the spinal cord, leading to pain or numbness in your neck, back, arms, or legs.

Nerves

Message-carrying nerves can become irritated, pinched, or stretched. This can cause pain, numbness, or tingling in your back or in other parts of your body.

Muscles and Ligaments

Supportive muscles and the vertebrae's connecting ligaments can become stretched, torn, or out of balance. Then vertebrae lose needed support and movement becomes restricted.

What to Expect

Spinal Adjustments
After locating any misaligned vertebrae in your spine, your chiropractor manually applies gentle pressure and repositions the vertebrae. By reducing pressure on nerves, these adjustments can help restore alignment, improve mobility, and relieve pain and stiffness.
